Occupational barometer: Scandinavian inspirations
21/09/2009
Representatives of the public employment services of Finland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and Poland participated in the meeting organised by the Centre for Employment and Economic Development for Southwestern Finland (Varsinais-Suomen TE-keskus).
The Finns and Swedes presented their experience in building short- and long-term forecasts of labour demand. The other speakers presented the options available for carrying out occupational barometers in other European countries.
The workshops carried out during the seminar proved particularly useful from the perspective of the Observatory. Discussions of methodologies, the technical and organisational aspects of the studies, and ways of presenting the results online – both publicly and on the intranet – brought practical recommendations. The idea of building up a European Occupational Barometer Research Network also came out of the talks.
Participation in the seminar made it possible for the Observatory to fine-tune the details of the Occupational barometer which will be carried out annually in cooperation with local labour offices in the region.
